Phigames, based in Manchester, consists of coder Phi Dinh, animator James Vincent Marshall, and sound designer Richard Evans. The soundtrack for Recompile will feature electro music in addition to the aforementioned guest track from 65daysofstatic. The cubes and buttons and fancy aesthetics bring to mind a cross between Aperture Science and the Grid from TRON. They’ll also work to uncover the mystery behind the Hypervisor and the purpose of the Mainframe. There will be multiple endings depending on player actions, such as whether repaired systems, restored data, and hacked or destroyed enemies. Much of the game’s progression is Igavania style, along with a healthy dose of non-linear exploration and gameplay. Enemies are intelligent, and you’ll have to use a number of movement abilities to traverse the circuitry. Learn abilities such as time dilation, or fly around with a jetpack. The player is a rogue piece of semi-sentient code that gets trapped in the Mainframe run by the malevolent AI known as the Hypervisor. Recompile includes light 3D platforming, combat with super-powered abilities, and a hacking mechanic that makes use of environmental physics. Dinh also announced the game’s partnership with 65daysofstatic for a guest track. It includes an intro from Phi Dinh, the Game Director. The reveal came as part of Gamespot’s Play for All 2021 showcase. Recompile is a “hack’n’shoot ’em up” and comes to Steam, the PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X in August. Phigames, the developer, and Dear Villagers, the publisher, announced a new trailer for Recompile.
